Spear is cell agnostic, meaning we can choose the very best cell for each project from any supplier in the world. We maintain close partnerships and work almost exclusively with world-class cell suppliers, such as Routejade and LG Energy Storage. In fact, in 2024 Spear was named an official battery pack manufacturer of LG. Working with high-quality cells is the first step in ensuring a safe battery.

Energy Storage System Integration

Spear Power SystemsToday’s energy storage systems are complex and require a mastery of multiple engineering and scientific disciplines, which is why Spear’s technical team is made up of a combination of electrical engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, scientists, program managers, and more. Whether installing a typical deployment of our COTS battery system or a new custom ESS, our applications engineers engage directly with our customers’ technical teams at the beginning of every project to fully define the ESS requirements and power system interfaces.

Our scalable BMS and modular battery pack strategy enables us to develop proof of concept units rapidly, cutting your time to market. We work together to design safe batteries and de-risk key performance criteria. When it comes time to flip the switch, Spear will be there alongside you with test results and diagnostic tools to make certain everything works according to plan - and Spear will continue to be there, with timely support and friendly service, whenever the need arises.

COTS Energy Storage System

Battery rackSpear is an expert in the robust, safe integration of lithium-ion cells into high-capacity, high-voltage strings. Spear’s commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution provides modular building blocks for the mechanical integration of prismatic pouch cells into energy storage systems from 100 VDC up to 1250 VDC with systems up to 10 MWh.

Our COTS system's proprietary thermal management design maximizes both cell life and operational range. The scalable modules are a key contributor to the ESS safety architectures, by assisting in the detection and mitigation of faults. It offers an industry-leading blend of thermal performance within a lightweight, compact volume, and patented passive propagation resistant design.

Spear's COTS system is a flexible battery solution, providing balanced energy density and power capabilities; while minimizing cost and lead time. This system is currently undergoing a mid-life upgrade, which is planned to be completed in Q2 2025.

sBMS - Scalable Battery Management System

MotherboardSpear’s veteran team of hardware and software engineers has developed battery management electronics for portable electronics, unmanned vehicles, advanced weapons, aircraft, and large-scale stationary storage. Spear’s next-generation sBMS builds upon the lessons learned from both this breadth of experience and working with leading industry technology partners. The modular architecture allows for the same circuit and software blocks to be used for 12V to 1250V applications, as well as for deployments of individual modules versus dozens of parallel strings.

The sBMS works with all lithium-ion cell chemistries, giving customers a dependable, common communications interface across different applications thereby compressing development and commissioning times. The state-of-the-art sBMS electronics gather the temperature and voltage measurements of each cell more quickly and precisely than other solutions, providing enhanced safety and more accurate prediction of the battery’s state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH)

Thermal Management

Heat signatureSpear’s thermal management strategies keep the battery safe and extend system life. Our in-house experts consider the cooling needs of each application, including thermal modeling to assist iterative design efforts and testing to verify the thermal models.

We have experience with passive, forced-air, liquid, and even immersion cooling solutions. We also implement heaters for extreme cold environments.

Passive Propagation Resistance

how battery lifeIf all the protective strategies put into place fail, our talented mechanical engineering team designs our batteries to prevent propagation in the rare event a battery goes into thermal runaway. We have proven passive propagation resistance to a single-cell group for both pouch and cylindrical cells. In fact, Spear was recently awarded a patent for our passive propagation design.
