Grandview, MO (August 2018): Spear Power Systems LLC (Spear) has been awarded a Phase I SBIR contract to address the Army’s requirement for a battery system that can support multiple voltages, avoiding the need for multiple fielded batteries to address multiple voltage requirements. The objective of this battery is to address legacy platforms, as well as emerging platforms requiring enhanced power, ranging from medium-sized military ground robot platforms such as the TALON to hybrid electric all-terrain vehicles and beyond.

During this Phase I effort, Spear will leverage its strong experience developing advanced lithium-ion battery systems and robust battery management systems for defense and industrial programs and provide an innovative lithium-ion 6T concept design. Challenges accepted by Spear include:

  • Dual Voltage (24V / 48V) operation
  • Drop in replacement – work within the existing battery form factor
  • Address legacy requirements as well as future vehicle requirements
  • Serve as a building block for higher voltage systems up to at least 300V

Follow-on potential includes a SBIR Phase II effort, bringing Spear’s concept to life by demonstrating the dual voltage operation and combining that technology to demonstrate a 300V hybrid mobility pack.

“Spear is excited about being a part of this very crucial program and the opportunity it presents” said Jeff Kostos, President and CEO of Spear. “We are proud to showcase our advanced technology to shape the growing need for advanced energy storage solution.”
