Spear’s energy storage solutions start with electrochemical cells, which form the basic building blocks of rechargeable battery systems by chemically storing electrical energy until it is needed. As a cell agnostic battery pack integrator Spear works with the world’s leading high quality battery cell suppliers to select the right chemistry, cell format, and capacity for your application taking into account performance, cost, and quality objectives. The Spear team has the unique vantage point of having both developed novel lithium ion cell chemistries and successfully transitioned high volume cell manufacturing from an offshore licensee to the United States. This deep expertise enables us to develop intimate knowledge of our partner’s cells ensuring you have the right building block for your battery.

Today’s commercially mature lithium ion rechargeable secondary cells can be grouped into some key electrochemical parings as detailed in the table below. Each of these chemistry options offers advantages, whether in cost, life, stability, density, or available capacities and formats. SBMS – Scalable Battery Management System

Spear’s veteran team of hardware and software engineers have developed battery management electronics for portable electronics, unmanned vehicles, advanced weapons, aircraft, and large scale stationary storage.  Spear’s next generation SBMS builds upon the lessons learned from both this breadth of experience and working with leading industry technology partners.  The modular architecture allows for the same circuit and software blocks to be used for 12V to 1250V applications, as well as for deployments of individual modules versus dozens of parallel strings.  The SBMS works with all lithium ion cell chemistries, giving customers a dependable, common communications interface across different applications thereby compressing development and commissioning times.  The state of the art SBMS electronics gather the temperature and voltage measurements of each cell more quickly and precisely than other solutions, providing enhanced safety and more accurate prediction of the battery’s state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH).

SMOD – Scalable Module

Spear is an expert in the robust, safe integration of lithium ion cells into high capacity, high voltage strings.  Spear’s SMOD provides modular building blocks for the mechanical integration of prismatic pouch or cylindrical can cells into energy storage systems from 12 to 1250 VDC and from 1s to 1000s of Ah.    The SMOD’s proprietary thermal management design maximizes both cell life and operational range.  The SMOD is a key contributor to the ESS safety architectures, by assisting in detection and mitigation of faults.   The SMOD offers an industry leading blend of thermal performance within a light weight, compact volume.

Energy Storage System Integration

Today’s ESSs are complex and require a mastery of multiple disciplines, which is why Spear’s technical team is made up of a combination of electrical engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, chemists, physicists, technicians, and program managers.  Whether installing a typical deployment of our Trident battery system or a new custom ESS, our applications engineers engage directly with our customers’ technical teams at the beginning of every project to fully define the ESS requirements and power system interfaces.  Our SBMS and SMOD building blocks enable us to develop proof of concept units rapidly, cutting your time to market.   We work together to design in safety and de-risk key performance criteria.  When it comes time to flip the switch, Spear will be there alongside you with test results and diagnostic tools to make certain everything works according to plan.  And Spear will continue to be there, with timely support and friendly service, whenever the need arises.
